Job Description:
The Arc Eastern Connecticut has been providing services to
individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for
more than 60 years. We actively champion for full community
inclusion and are a licensed and contracted service provider of the
Connecticut Department of Development Services. We provide
residential, daytime, employment, and social supports to people
with IDD and their families. The Assistant Director is responsible
for supervising cabin counselors for the camp program as well as
implementing camp activities. He/She will be assigned specific
areas of responsibility including supervision of recreation, arts &
crafts, horseback riding, supply inventory, overseeing registration
and pick-up procedures. The Assistant Director will adhere to the
policies established by The Arc New London County, Inc. Board of
Directors whose goal is to maintain full community inclusion and
integration for all individuals who are supported by The Arc. Come

2:00 pm Fridays Work Location : Waterford, CT Essential Functions:
Supervision of Camp Activities Plan and implement weekly theme
activities Supervise and oversee camp activities including arts
crafts, recreation, beach, structured afternoon activity, evening
activity Set-up, run and clean up all camp activities Supervise
direct care staff members during activities Ensure campers health
and safety according to individual camper profiles Ensure campers
are brought to the nurse for medication intervals and as needed for
first aid Monitor staff to camper ratios, reassign staff as needed
to ensure safe staffing patterns Review water safety assessments
and ensure campers are following individual guidelines Supervision
of Cabin Counselors Directly supervise and support 2-3 cabins per
session (4-6 counselors and 12-14 campers) Review camper profile
sheets for assigned cabins prior to start of the session. These
include: Individual Support Plan, Behavior Plan, Skills Checklists,
Behavior Checklists, and Water Safety Assessment Conduct a meeting
with direct care staff assigned to each support cabin to review
camper profile sheets and create a plan of care prior to start of
session Conduct cabin checks at three intervals throughout the day
to ensure camper’s needs are being met Assist campers with direct
care needs Assist direct care staff in cafeteria as needed to meet
camper needs Review daily cabin logs and provide feedback as needed
Review incident reports and submit per protocol Check cabins for
cleanliness and adherence to cleaning policy, and issue clean cabin
awards Will perform administrative tasks as assigned by the Camp
Director Areas of Responsibility (one area will be assigned to each
Assistant Director) Supply Inventory & Horseback Riding Inventory
household supplies on a weekly basis Place order of needed supplies
after receiving approval from Camp Director Organize and clean
supply room on a daily basis including restocking of supplies as
needed Check cabins two times per session to check that supplies
are stocked and being properly stored in the cabin area Complete
Bed Audit forms at the opening and close of the session as needed
Review campers eligible for horseback riding per session
Communicate with the staff from High Hopes concerning camper’s
needs Attend each horseback riding session to supervisor and
integrate camp staff with the staff from High Hopes Recreation
Inventory equipment at the beginning of the season and order
replacement equipment as needed and approved by the Camp Director
Plan a weekly recreation program to include 2 structured activities
per day (8 per week) Gather the needed equipment and set-up the
morning activity Facilitate the morning activity from 10:30 – 12:00
each day Supervise the camper’s individual needs Encourage campers
to participate Clean up from morning activity Gather the needed
equipment for the afternoon activity and make available for staff
to facilitate the activity Arts & Crafts Inventory equipment at the
beginning of the season and order replacement materials as needed
and approved by the Camp Director Plan a weekly arts and crafts
program to include 2 structured activities per day (8 per week)
Gather the needed materials and set up the morning activity Gather
the needed equipment and set-up the morning activity Facilitate the
morning activity from 10:30 – 12:00 each day Supervise the camper’s
individual needs Encourage campers to participate Clean up from
morning activity Gather the needed equipment for the afternoon
activity and make available for staff to facilitate the activity
Registration & Pick Up Set up the registration room on Sundays
Greet each camper and care providers Check paperwork with care
provider including contact information and pick up materials Issue
a weekly schedule to care providers Greet each care provider upon
pick up and instruct them to visit the camp nurse to collect
medications Communicate with camp nurse and cabin counselors which
camper(s) are being picked up Assign staff to help camper gather
belongings and escort the camper to their care provider
Expectations: Maintain a mature and positive attitude when dealing
with program participants, staff, families, the public, and outside
representatives. Advocates for and protects participants’ rights in
accordance with Arc policies and procedures. Treats all individuals
in an age appropriate manner, with respect and dignity, and to
encourage opportunities that promote choice. Carry out all job
responsibilities in a professional manner Attends weekly
administrative staff meetings Will begin duty at 12:00 p.m. on
Sundays and end 2:00 p.m. on Fridays Will adhere to weekly
overnight duty schedule as assigned by Camp Director Will actively
engage staff and campers in all activities Will report concerns to
Camp Director in a timely manner Will follow camp dress code
Minimum Qualifications: Prior experience working with people who
have developmental and physical disabilities preferred. Must have
the ability to mentor and assist people in all areas of life skills
including recreation, independence, communication, and health.
Minimum of three years’ experience working in the health and human
service field. Valid driver’s license required. High School Diploma
or GED Required Applicants must possess basic computer aptitude The
Assistant Director must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
He/She will be required to participate in lifts, transfers, and
behavioral or physical intervention when necessary. He/She may be
exposed to risk of injury or exposure to occupational health
